States of Matter Study Guide
Test: Thursday, February 9, 2012
Things to Know/Review:
· Chapter 11 in your textbook (pages 313-343)-use chapter review to help you study! J
· Be able to describe the particles in a solid, liquid, and gas
o Solid: particles close together, fixed position, organized
o Liquid: particles close together, slide past one another (no fixed position)
o Gas: particles far apart, no fixed shape or volume
· Be able to describe the particles when changing states
o From solid to liquid; from liquid to gas; from gas to liquid; from liquid to solid
§ For example, when a solid becomes a liquid, the particles begin to move slowly, spread out, and slide past one another.
§ When do you add heat? When do you take away heat?
§ Google “Study Jams Matter” for video, song, vocab, and quiz!
· Define matter (anything that has mass and takes up space)
· Evaporation is the change from liquid to gas (so what happens to the particles?)
· Condensation is the change from gas to liquid (so what happens to the particles?)
· Difference between physical and chemical changes (and some examples of each)
· Describe density and why some things sink and some things float
