Wednesday

One test down!  I think overall students feel good about the SS test!  Yay.  Friday is a big day, filled with the usual tests (DR Quiz, Spelling Test, Reading Quiz), and our Math Test on Division.  Students completed the second study guide today, and should have it in their folders.  Anything written in red was an answer given by me, but everything on the page is information that they are responsible for except for the divisibility tests near the end of the study guide (which they mostly understand, but is actually a 5th grade skill).  Monday is the Science Test on rocks/minerals--a study guide came home on Monday.

Tonight's official homework:
  • Reading: Log
  • Spelling: study words
  • Math: study for test Friday
  • Science: Test Monday

Wacky Hair Wednesday

Hello!
Let me begin by explaining our math situation.  I am fully aware that many 4th graders are struggling with long division.  I actually haven't taken a grade on any division homework yet--just giving participation grades for turning it in and attempting it because I know so many are having a hard time.  We are spending hours each day working on math (my brain is MUSH! :) ), and I keep reminding students to not give up and keep practicing.  Please do not panic if your child is confused!  The best advice I can give is to keep practicing at home, and google any division math games (there is a great practice game at http://www.mathplayground.com/, http://www.ixl.com/, http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/).  Good luck!

Tonight's homework is:
  • Reading: Log
  • Spelling: worksheet (some will finish in class)
  • Math: worksheet (2 or 3 digit quotients)
Also, tomorrow for Red Ribbon Week we are wearing our green SGES shirts.

Have a great night!

Multiplication Monday :)

Helloooooo!

First of all, please look for the Fourth Grade Follow Up in your child's yellow folder, which is full of information you might need to know!  A few of the highlights and other things:
  • Multiplication Quiz tomorrow.  This will count as 2 daily grades in math.  A study guide came home today for practice.
  • No reading quiz, spelling words, or DR quiz this week since there are only 3 days of school.  Yahoo!
  • Northeast States test on Wednesday over states, capitals, and other information about the Northeast.  A study guide came home last week, and SS books were supposed to come home today.
  • Reading Log is still homework (use it for reading about the Northeast!) :)
  • There is a fossil crossword puzzle that is extra credit for Science.  It is not due until Wednesday, and is optional...although based on the science tests of some, I think you might want to require it!  Students are required to correct any missed questions, and any F's on the TEST require a parent signature. (The test is the one with the ORQ at the end--the Ecosystems Quiz was the shorter of the two.)
Hope this helps.  Two more days! Two more days!

Wacky Wednesday

Well, day 2 of mad math multiplication went much better than day 1!  TOnight's homework will be for a grade, so please let your child do as much of it on their own as possible so that I can see who needs help, and who has the hang of it.  Thanks!

Two-Digit Multiplication Tuesday...

Get ready, parents!  Homework might be a bit challenging tonight.  We are working on two-digit x two-digit "long" multiplication...and my oh my, have we had a rough time!  Rest assured, we have done many practice problems in class...with that, I wish you good luck.  I narrowed it down to odds only...and we're spending tomorrow on the same skill, if that helps?!?! :)

Homework is as follows:
  • Math: worksheet--odds only
  • Reading: Log; quiz Friday over story and vocab
  • Spelling: test Friday
Also, if you'd like a website with great math practice games, try http://www.mathplayground.com/ or http://www.ixl.com/ ...

Thursday...

Hi All,
We have had a very busy day today, and tomorrow should be a big day, too.  Tomorrow is our end of the month celebration, and we are switching to October's character trait, which is creativity.  We are asking students to wear tie-dyed shirts if they have them, or brightly colored shirts.

Homework for tonight is as follows:
  • Reading: Log; study for reading test over Kapok Tree story and vocabulary
  • Spelling: study for test
  • Math: finish worksheet
  • Study for DR quiz
Many students pulled sticks today for not having a reading assignment finished.  We are also having a great deal of DRAMA beginning in our class...with boyfriends and girlfriends, with lying, with tattling, and with not treating one another respectfully.  Please reinforce with your child the importance of focusing on what's important at school. Thank you.

Wonderful Wednesday

Did you know that today is "Read a Child a Book You Like" Day? This day celebrates the birthday (1856) of Kate Douglas Wiggin, author of Rebecca at Sunnybrook Farm and other wonderful children's stories. Share a book you've loved for a long time with a child you love now!

Tomorrow is Picture Day! Please send your child to school in their picture day clothes, as we usually do pictures in the morning.  Don't worry about gym--Mr. Fields usually doesn't require gym shoes on picture day.  Also, even if you don't plan to order a package of pictures, please return the form anyway with your POSE SELECTION marked.  This is the pose they'll use for the yearbook photo.

Tonight's homework is:
  • Reading: Log; quiz on Friday on Great Kapok Tree
  • Math: finish "Estimating Products" worksheet (most finished in class today)
  • Spelling: study words; worksheet

Multiplication Meltdown...and Wacky Wednesday

Today we all realized a very scary fact.  4th grade math is going to be extremely PAINFUL for everyone if a bunch of 4th graders I know don't learn their BASIC MULTIPLICATION FACTS!  Whoa--in a one minute timed test (not for a grade), I had students who hardly got any correct (some only got one correct answer...).  We looked through our math book at what is coming our way (4-digit times 1-digit; 2-digit times 2-digit)...and we officially panicked.  I am declaring from experience that MEMORIZING basic multiplication facts will make all of our lives much much better.  I beg of you...please quiz your child!  Find multiplication games online (take them to http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/ and choose from a variety of multiplication drill games--we looked at a few in class).  Make flash cards together, or purchase an inexpensive set from the Dollar Tree or Walmart.  But please oh please make this a homework priority!  I suggested just ten minutes a night would be better than nothing at all.  (Can you tell I'm a bit panicked?)

Tonight's homework is:
  • Reading: Log; Book Project is due Thursday 9/22/11 (a letter came home about this today)
  • Spelling: study words- test Friday
  • Math: 10 minutes of multiplication drill (or more!!!)

As always, thanks for your support!

PTO is gearing up for the Fall Fair.  If you are signed up to bring in a 2L of soda, send those in anytime this week.  Baked goods for the Cake Walk can be brought to the office on Friday.  Finally, don't assume other parents are working for your class game - check with your child's teacher to see when they need help!

TOMORROW is Stamping Ground day at Chick-Fil-A.  Go to the school website for details, and download the flyer (which will also be sent home today) in the Forms and Downloads section!  Our time slot is 5:00-7:30.  We will also have a special visitor here to remind the kids about it as they leave school!

Grandparents week is upon us!  We look forward to having many special visitors the next three days.

The book fair is going on this week, too!

Thank you for supporting our school and our PTO.  Your support is one of the things that makes SGE great!!

Terrific Tuesday

Tonight's homework is:
  • Science: Finish life cycle diagram (must choose between a snake, frog, butterfly, plant, or snail)
  • Reading: Log
  • Math: Study old test for tomorrow's re-test (see newsletter for explanation)
Just a heads-up...when reviewing math today in class, I noticed that many students are struggling in two major areas.  One is comparing decimals by looking at their place value (ex.  Is 0.29 <, >, or = 2.29?), and the other major concern is changing numbers from word form to standard form (ex.  "Which of the following says 'nine million, two hundred twelve thousand, fifteen?'").  PLEASE study with your child tonight--they have the opportunity to raise their math grade tomorrow--I hope they make it worthwhile!

Don't forget to return the Fall Fair and Grandparents' Lunch forms that came home in yesterday's yellow folders.  Happy homeworking!

Thursday, August 11th

Today was our first (mostly) routine day...and things went really well!  Students got to meet Mrs. Fredericks, and begin their first Social Studies and Language Arts classes.  We also took the Math Inventory Assessment to identify student strengths and weaknesses in the area of math.  Whew--What a busy day!

Tonight's homework is to complete the writing worksheet called "Sharing Thoughts and Feelings."  Also, if students have not yet returned room fees, please do so as soon as possible.

It's almost FRIDAY!!! :)

Wednesday, August 10th

Happy Second Day of School!  Today we discussed lots of important "back to school" things, including bus safety.  Here we are reviewing the rules for riding the bus!

Tomorrow we will begin getting into our normal routine--this includes Language Arts class with Mrs. Fredericks, and PULLING STICKS!  We have had a great (but VERY CHATTY) two days...hopefully tomorrow will be better!

Tonight's homework is:
Write 3 questions for Mrs. Fredericks.  They can be about Social Studies, Language Arts, or just questions for Mrs. Fredericks.
Also, don't forget to get agendas signed! :)

First Day of School

Well, we had a GREAT first day!  It was so exciting to get to know a new group of 4th graders, and hopefully they enjoyed getting to know each other.

Tonight's homework (gasp!) should appear in your child's agenda.  They have two jobs:
1) Complete "2 Facts and a False" with your help
2) Get agenda signed. (This is a nightly responsibility of theirs--THEY should come to YOU!)

Looking forward to another great day! :)
