Marvelous Monday

Hello!

Report cards are coming home today.  Please take a few minutes to review these with your child, sign, and return them to school this week.  Also, keep an eye out for the Fourth Grade Follow-Up, as well as some other graded papers and notes in your child's yellow folder.

In keeping with our discussion of safety, we talked about bus stop safety today, and reviewed these tips.  Please discuss these with your child.  There are quite a few fourth graders who do not know their phone number...
·         If someone is following you in a car, turn around and go in the opposite direction or take a path where a car would not go.  Run to safety.  Tell an adult and call 911. Do not try to hide behind bushes.
·         Never go near a car with someone in it and never  get into car without parent permission.. Explain to students that someone might try to lure them into a car by saying their parent said to pick them up. Tell them never to obey such instructions
·         Share a secret code word with your parents – you and your parents should have a code word that is easy for you to remember.  This way if anyone tells you that you need to come with them because your parents were hurt or in the hospital you can ask them for the code word.  If they really are a friend they will know the code word that you and your parents share.  If they do not know the code word you should run away from them as fast as possible.
·         Practice yelling and running to get help. Teach children to use their voices and bodies to get away when someone is acting in a scary way. Explain that your voice can get the attention of people who can help you. Have children practice yelling “ HELP!” “NO! STOP!” using a voice that is loud and strong. Have them practice yelling, “I NEED HELP” while running to a person who can help them. Remind students not to just scream.
·         Never leave school or any other extracurricular activity or event with someone unless you have parent permission and  teacher permission
·         It is safer for me to be with other people when going places or playing outside. Always use the "buddy system."
·         Learn how and when to call 911
·         Know your name, address, and phone number
·         Avoid shortcuts when you are walking from one place to another
